Myelin Sheath
- Is an insulating layer that forms around nerves, including those in the brain and the spinal cord
- This insulating layer is made up of protein and fatty substances
- Purpose is to allow impulses to transmit quickly and efficiently along the nerve cells
- Usually located around the axons of certain neurons
- If the myelin sheath is damaged, the impulses slow down
- Damage can cause diseases such as multiple sclerosis
- The more myelin is destroyed, the slower and less efficient the nerve impulses are
